More About Julia

Thank you for stopping by Frantic Mama!

I'm a freelance writer living in Minnesota with my husband and two young children. I write for many publications across the web and in print, including: Mamalode, Felicity Huffman's What the Flicka, Horse IllustratedSammiches & Psych Meds, and more.

My stories are also in a few books and magazines. Find samples of my publications on my freelance website, JuliaStarrArnold.com.

Eager to learn more?

I mostly grew up in the Midwest (somewhereabouts the red area below).

I majored in English Literature at the University of Michigan and met the love of my life, my now-husband, when I was a junior.

Then I went off to the East Coast to grad school to get my Master's in Education from Harvard.

With diplomas hot off the press, in an uncharacteristically bold move, I moved to a new state-- Minnesota-- where I knew no one except the above-mentioned boyfriend. I got a great job teaching high school English. I hope I encouraged a love of reading in my students, most of whom had significant learning disabilities.
One freezing cold Valentine's Day, my boyfriend put a ring on it and we got married a few months later.  (See our whole engagement story on Felicity Huffman's site, What the Flicka, here). Our love story as of now, can be read on Mamalode, here.

Fast forward...

It all changed a lot.

When I had my son in 2010, my daily routine went from:

working ---> relaxing -----> happy hours/trips/doing nothing ----------> taking care of myself and only myself-----> doing more of whatever I wanted...

to

focusing my entire world around one little baby who is still an infinitely complicated mix of the serious, impossible, lovable, sensitive, and humorous. He is All The Things.

Beep. Beep. Boop! 2 Years later...

Two babies -----> two kids -----> all the things.

Kids are really cute...They are really a lot of work.

Hence, my blog title: Frantic Mama.

Anytime I have a few precious minutes to myself, you'll find me typing away on my laptop or repainting old furniture. Sometimes I'm out riding horses or playing with my pets. Other times, I'm reading, or watching really bad t.v.

I immediately love anyone who reads my work. Want me to love you too? Sign up on my homepage to receive my posts via e-mail.

Extra credit: find my author profile and become a fan to keep track of my projects on Goodreads.

My essays have been featured across the web (check me out on Mamalode) and in several anthologies: Will Work for Apples, You Do You,  Clash of the CouplesOnly Trollops Shave Above the Knee: The Crazy, Brilliant, and Unforgettable Lessons We've Learned from our Mothers, and Never Will I Ever (and then I had kids!).

Randomness:

I am almost always on time, if not early. I'm not a big fan of Tuesdays. I try to grow vegetables each summer and barely succeed. I have an adorable little calico cat, a fluffy gray bunny, and a new puppy.

I love:
Coffee
Reading
Horses
Photography
Beer
Ice cream
Art
The beach/ocean/water
Window shopping (Alone! No kids! No strollers!)
Comedies (especially if Steve Carrell and/or Will Ferrell are in them)

That about sums me up.

Feel free to drop me a note.

(Image not me. Ha!).

P.S.  If you're still reading, I'm very impressed. I like you already.
