More About Julia

Thank you for stopping by Frantic Mama!

I'm a freelance writer living in Minnesota with my husband and two young children. I write for many publications across the web, including: Mamalode, Felicity Huffman's What the Flicka, HorseChannel, Sammiches & Psych Meds, Bon Bon Break, and more.

My stories are also in a few books. The most recent book I contributed to is the humor anthology Never Will I Ever (and then I had kids!).

Eager to learn more?

I mostly grew up in the Midwest (somewhereabouts the red area below).

I majored in English Literature at the University of Michigan and met the love of my life, my now-husband, when I was a junior.

Then I went off to the East Coast to grad school to get my Master's in Education from Harvard.

With diplomas hot off the press, in an uncharacteristically bold move, I moved to a new state-- Minnesota-- where I knew no one except the above-mentioned boyfriend. I got a great job teaching high school English. I valued the connections I made with my high schoolers and getting to read and discuss some of my favorite books. I hope I encouraged a love of reading in my students, most of whom had significant learning disabilities.
One freezing cold Valentine's Day, my boyfriend put a ring on it and we got married a few months later.  (See our whole engagement story on Felicity Huffman's site, What the Flicka, here). Our love story as of now, can be read on Mamalode, here.

Fast forward...

It all changed. A lot.

When I had my son in 2010, my daily routine went from:

working ---> relaxing -----> happy hours/trips/doing nothing ----------> taking care of myself and only myself-----> doing more of whatever I wanted...

to

focusing my entire world around one little baby who is still an infinitely complicated mix of the serious, impossible, lovable, sensitive, and humorous. He is All The Things, really.

Beep. Beep. Boop! 2 Years later...

There were 2 babies under our roof. Two little kids take up most of my time and energy.

They are really cute...They are really a lot of work.

Hence, my blog title: Frantic Mama.

Anytime I have a few precious minutes to myself, you will find me typing away on my laptop or maybe repainting old furniture. Sometimes riding horses. Other times, reading, or better yet-- watching really bad (so bad it's good) t.v.

I immediately love anyone who reads my work. Want me to love you too? Sign up on my homepage to receive my posts via e-mail

Extra credit: find my author profile and become a fan to keep track of my projects on Goodreads.

I am currently working on my first adult fiction novel, and I plan to query agents in the next few weeks months/years/someday.

My essays have been featured across the web (check me out on Mamalode) and in several humor anthologies:  Clash of the CouplesOnly Trollops Shave Above the Knee: The Crazy, Brilliant, and Unforgettable Lessons We've Learned from our Mothers, and Never Will I Ever (and then I had kids!).  Also arriving soon is What is a Mother To Do (available 2016, Monkey Star Press).

Randomness:

I'm a big Bachelor/Bachelorette fan. But I would never actually taken part in it. Mainly because I'm married, but also because I go to bed early and I need to eat a lot of snacks throughout the day.

I am almost always on time, if not early.

I love:
Coffee
Reading
Horses
Beer (especially wheat ales, but I'll take whatever you've got.)
Ice cream
Art
The beach/ocean/water
Window shopping (Alone! No kids! No strollers!)
Comedies (especially if Steve Carrell and/or Will Ferrell are in them)
Drunk Uncle and all of the current female comedians on SNL

That about sums me up.

Feel free to drop me a note.

(Image not me. Ha!).

P.S.  If you're still reading, I'm very impressed. I like you already.
